Final Fantasy XIV Class Guide

To change your class in Final Fantasy XIV is as simple as changing what weapon you are equipped with. You can find NPC venders all around Limsa Lominsa selling Rank 1 weapons for each class and thanks to having substantial inventory space there is no harm in stocking up on each classes’ weapon early on.

The various Final Fantasy XIV classes available are grouped together under certain disciplines. Your combat centered classes fall under Disciples of War, crafting classes under Disciples of the Hand and gathering classes under Disciples of the Land.

Final Fantasy XIV Classes

What follows is a brief overview of the various FFXIV classes and the styles they play in. A list of skills, traits, abilities and spells for each differs.

The Final Fantasy XIV classes are categorized under disciples and are currently as follows:

Disciples of War – Archer, Gladiator, Lancer, Marauder and Pugilist

Disciples of the Hand – Alchemist, Armorer, Blacksmith, Carpenters, Culinarian, Goldsmith, Leatherworker and Weaver.

Disciples of Magic – Conjurer and Thaumaturge

Disciples of the Land – Botanist, Fisher and Miner

Final Fantasy XIV Guides to each of the disciple can be found in most forums and community sites and will be added here shortly as well.

Final Fantasy XIV Races Guide

In the world of Eorzea there are five selectable playable races and within some there are sub-races or variants based on your selected background. Unlike previous Square Enix games or other MMORPG, racial choice in FFXIV has no influence over statistics or performance.

The one thing that does have influence during creation of a character is the sign you select for them to be born under, however this feature is not implemented in the Beta.

Payable races in Final Fantasy XIV are as follows:

  • Hyur
  • Lalafell
  • Elezen
  • Miqo’te
  • Roegadyn

More information about each of the races can also be found at FinalFantasyXIVGuide.org and FFXIVClasses.com.

Final Fantasy XIV Class Rank Guide

There are two types of progress to be made in FFXIV and these are Class Ranks and Physical Level.

Miqo'te

Class Ranks refer to the rank of your currently selected class and nothing else while Physical Level is your character’s strength regardless of class. For example; you are Physical Level 10 and are a Rank 6 Pugilist. This rank is retained even if you change to a different class and also opens up the customization options available to you as certain abilities, traits and spells can be interchanged once you have learned them. If you then changed to Lancer Rank 1, you would still be Physical Level 10.

Rank increases by gaining skill in the weapon or tool you are required to equip in order to play as that class. This might display like “Your Hand-to-Hand skill improves by 45” after killing an enemy.

Final Fantasy XIV Classes’ Physical Level

Physical Level increases by gaining experience Points. This might display like “You gain 1500 Experience Points” after killing an enemy.

The progress for both of these can be checked by looking at the top of the screen when you bring up your main menu (-).

The only way to learn abilities, traits and spells is to gain ranks in classes. The only way to improve your statistics is through gaining Physical Levels.

When you gain a Physical Level you are given six skill points to distribute among your stats (STR, VIT, DEX and so on) and six for elemental defense (Lightning, Fire, Water and so on) and this is done via ‘Point Allocation’ in your menu. Should you make a mistake or simply not like how you have used your points, you can buy a reallocation option.
